Censor Geoffrey Shurlock was concerned that the characters were too young to be having sex. He ordered the scene to be rewritten to keep the clinches down to only one kiss. And Shurlock insisted that there should not be the merest hint that sex followed the fade-out after their kiss. Shurlock instructed that in the moment following the love scene “there be nothing about her appearance or actions that suggests that there has been a previous sex affair between her and Jim. The same, of course, applies to Jim’s appearance.”
Stewart Stern had written two lines that suggested Jim and Judy were virgins, simply naive lines, and suitably vague.
Jim: There’s something I should tell you, Judy.Judy: I know already.
“I really wanted them to be virgins,” says Stern. “I wanted as big a contrast as possible to their behavior. Everyone was always boasting about who they laid in high school and no one was laying anybody.” But surprisingly, this allusion to virginity did not please the censors either. It, too, was cut.
